From Injury to Return to Competitive Action
A specialized training program for physiotherapists, aiming at the scientifically documented rehabilitation of sports injuries - from the first moment of injury to the full return of the athlete or sportsperson to their competitive requirements in team and individual sports.
Description
This educational program is designed for physical therapists who are active in the prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries related to sports and physical activity.
It is aimed at those who wish to update, broaden and deepen their knowledge, based on the most recent scientific developments and guidelines. The program focuses on a comprehensive rehabilitation approach — from the acute phase of injury to the athlete's full return to competitive activity, in both team and individual sports, with safety, functional adequacy and a high level of performance.
Particular emphasis is placed on:
– In the assessment and management of injuries per stage of rehabilitation
– Personalizing rehabilitation according to the needs and requirements of each athlete
– Integrating biological, kinetic and psychological factors into the return to exercise and competition process
– The use of modern tools, technologies and recovery protocols
– Interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of clinical judgment
At the same time, the program promotes the connection of modern physiotherapy rehabilitation with the principles of Sports Science, providing participants with the opportunity to combine clinical knowledge, performance assessment and modern reintegration strategies. The goal is the comprehensive management of the athlete up to the final stages of the Return-to-Play process, leading safely and functionally to full reintegration into the team and competitive activity.
Beyond theoretical training, the program encourages the exchange of experiences, the application of knowledge in practice and the creation of substantive professional dialogue, with the aim of continuously improving the quality of services to athletes and the wider community.
Purpose
The purpose of the program is to train physiotherapists in providing comprehensive and holistic knowledge for the management of the athlete, from the initial phase of the injury to the safe and effective return to his/her competitive obligations.
The innovation that characterizes the "Sports Rehabilitation Specialist" program lies in its conduct in real time, through simulations that capture realistic clinical and competitive conditions.
The goal is, through the application of the most up-to-date scientific research, to provide participants with knowledge and skills that can be directly integrated into clinical practice, improving the quality and effectiveness of rehabilitation services.
Who is it addressed to?
• Licensed physical therapists who wish to specialize in sports rehabilitation
• Physiotherapy graduates with a clinical interest in athletic populations
• Physiotherapists who wish to transition into the role of Sports Rehabilitator
• Those who want to develop decision-making skills for a return to competitive action
Admission Requirements:
Degree in Physiotherapy
Proficiency in English
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:
• Design and implement personalized rehabilitation programs, tailored to the type of injury and the demands of each sport.
• They apply documented scientific protocols for the rehabilitation of sports injuries, at all stages of recovery.
• They incorporate principles of biomechanics, physiology and neuromuscular control, aiming for total functional rehabilitation.
• They assess the physical and functional status of athletes using ergometric methods, reintegration tests and specialized assessment tools.
• They manage rehabilitation based on the type of injured tissue (muscle, ligament, tendon, joint) and adjust the course of the program according to clinical milestones.
• Recognize the athlete's psychological readiness and implement strategies to prevent relapses.
• They design and implement on-field rehabilitation programs, following the structured ON FI.RE. framework.
• They document their clinical decisions based on modern guidelines and objective progress criteria.
• They collaborate effectively with coaches, physicians and performance teams, enhancing the interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation.
• They guide the athlete's safe return to competitive action, based on documented, multifactorial criteria.
Implementation method
The program will be implemented in small groups of trainees. The program has a duration of 52 weeks and corresponds to 100 hours of training. The 60 hours of synchronous distance learning will be carried out once a week and the 40 hours of in-person training will be carried out over two weekends. It is of a mixed or hybrid type (blended learning) and is based on a combination of synchronous distance learning, asynchronous distance learning and in-person training. The part of the synchronous and in-person teaching, especially with regard to the purely clinical part, will include interactive laboratory sessions with clinical and laboratory-practical exercises, demonstrations, simulations and clinical representations.
In more detail:
• 60 teaching hours are carried out through modern distance learning (lectures lasting hours each)
• 40 teaching hours are carried out with modern (live) practice in a gym and on a court.
